March 26, 2000    What do we need in the church?        Acts 6

Deacons Ordination Service

By Ronald E. George Jr. at the Fayetteville Baptist Church

This is a sermon for the church today to be charged in the dedication of it's leaders.

Acts 6:1 (KJS) And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. 2 Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples [unto them], and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables. 3 Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. 4 But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word. 5 And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch: 6 Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid [their] hands on them. 7 And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.

  1. We need some more Growing Pains. (v. 1) We need more, because we are reaching, striving, trying, growing to meet the needs of the people that God has placed within our reach.
  2. We need some more leaders who act. (v.2) As the old saying goes, lead, follow, or get out of the way. Do you to be a stumbling block or a stepping stone for those who need to receive the Lord? Which are you?
  3. We need more people who put first things first. (v. 2-4) Your gift needs to be used not buried. After you dig it up you need to put it to use in the Lord's work. Then people will be touched and lives need to be changed.
  4. We need more pleased people who are together. (v. 5) The whole bunch was happy. So many people are unhappy with the preacher, the church, the deacons, but the truth is they are unhappy with themselves and they are unhappy with the Lord. So, how is it possible for everyone to be happy with everything? You have to get in touch with the Lord and then you will begin to realize that He is in control of things here and you can trust him to do the best.
  5. We need more people to step out and up to serve the Lord and the People. (v. 5) The greatest ability is avail-ability. Are you ready to serve the people? We are not here to be served but we are His to serve others. JFK said ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what can you do for your country. God says ask not what the church can do for me, but what can I do for the Lord and the church.
  6. We need more people to be full of Faith and the Holy Ghost. (v. 5) If the Lord looked around our church today could he find 7 people that were full of the Holy Ghost and faith. Would you be counted as one those that would have been picked? The Lord is looking for a few good people who are willing to filled with him that they might be used by him to save the lost in your community who you have been overlooking for years. It is time to step up and to step out.
  7. We need more of the Word of the Living God. (v. 7) We need more people who are willing to study it and live it. Jesus is the living word who sends out his followers to be his word to this world today.
  8. We need more disciples. (v. 1,7) This passage begins and ends with this fact: the number of the disciples was multiplied. The Lord wants people to become than just innocent bystanders in his church. He wants you! He wants you to become a follower and learner of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Are you willing?
  9. Then we will see a great company of people converted to Jesus. (v.7) Will it be you? Will you be used by the Lord to win a great company of people to the Lord?
