September  17, 2000        The Jesus Freaks         Titus 2:11-15

By Ronald E. George Jr. at the Fayetteville Baptist Church

A popular CCM song is entitled Jesus Freak.  A group that is called DC Talk sings it.  DC stands for Decent Christian Talk.  Here are some of the words of that song: “People say I’m strange, does it make me a stranger, that my best friend was born in a manger.  What will people think when they hear that I, am a Jesus Freak?  What will people do when they find out it’s true?  I don’t really care if they label me a Jesus Freak.  There ain’t no disguising the truth.  There ain’t no disguising the truth, no I ain’t in to hiding the truth.”    There is a movement today among the youth of America.  It’s a Jesus movement.  People are realizing that the world is full of empty promises.  So they are turning to the Lord to fulfill their greatest need.  There is a great need for purpose in life.  What is the reason for living when there is nothing at the end?

Who are the freaks?  The freaks of my day were the potheads.  They wore terrible looking clothes.  Their hair was long.  They generally didn’t care about rules and regulations because most of the time they were high.  Today’s Jesus Freaks are a different bread altogether.  They are a group of young people who don’t care to let others know that they serve the only true living God.  They aren’t afraid to let people know that follow Jesus.  They aren’t afraid to live for Jesus wherever they are or whomever they are with.  Are you a Jesus freak?  Here are five characteristics of the Jesus Freak.

Titus 2:11 (KJS) For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, 12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; 13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; 14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

What is a Jesus Freak?

  1. F.  Faithful:  They are faithful to follow Jesus.  Denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world.
  1. R. Redeemed:  For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,  14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity,  They are those who been redeemed by the blood of the lamb.  They have received Jesus as their Lord and Savior and they have given themselves to the one who gave himself for them.
  1. E. Extreme:  zealous of good works. They are the generation that is not afraid to give themselves completely for the Lord.  They are the next generation of missionaries, ministers, and followers of the Lord.  They are all out for him who went all out for them.  Have you gone all the way for the Lord?  These are the zealots of the day.  They are willing to do the work of the Lord at all costs.  Some are willing to die and do die for the Lord.
  1. A. Ambitious:  They are ambitious for the Lord’s work.  They want to see God’s Kingdom advance into this world.  They want to see their friends, family, and neighbors come to know the Lord in their lives.  They ambitiously making plans and carrying out the work of the Lord at their own expense.  What work do we want to see the Lord accomplish in this church, in this FBY, and in this area?  Are you ready to carry it out?
  1. K.  King’s / kings     Rev. 1:6 And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him [be] glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.  They belong to the King and they are kings and queens in their own right.  They look like they belong to the king by the lives that they live.  They are in style with the Lord and not just in style with the world.  He is pleased that these people may be seen as freaks in the eyes of the world, but in his eyes they are the kings of his world.
