Dec. 3, 2000   When God Came to Joseph and Mary    Luke 1

By Ronald E. George Jr. at the Fayetteville Baptist Church

Scripture Text:  Luke 1:46 (KJS) And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, 47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. 48 For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. 49 For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy [is] his name. 50 And his mercy [is] on them that fear him from generation to generation. 51 He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. 52 He hath put down the mighty from [their] seats, and exalted them of low degree. 53 He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away. 54 He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of [his] mercy; 55 As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever. 56 And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.

When God Came He gave them a son.  God is the author of life, and he wants to give you life through His Son Jesus.

When God Came did you receive Him or reject Him.  To receive Him is to receive His way for your life.  For Mary this meant that she would bare Him a Son.  He would become the only begotten Son of God who take the sin of the people.  He would become rejected by men, but received by his people.

When God came He came to a woman of low estate.  She was a person without worldly pomp or praise.  She was a woman who would have been considered poor.  And she was poor in spirit.  She was humble.  She was a woman who was not thought to have deserved God in her life.  But she was a woman of faith and a woman who followed God in her life.

When God came she received him.

When God came He changed her life.  She became an outcast.

When God came she glorified him with a song:

This is Mary’s song.

 1.      Her soul magnified the Lord.  Put the focus on God and praised Him.

I like what William James wrote:

"Everyone knows on any given day that there are energies slumbering in him which the incitements of that day do not call forth.... Compared with what we ought to be, we are only half awake.  Our fires are damped, our drafts are checked.   We are making use of only a small part of our possible mental and physical resources....  Stating the thing broadly, the human individual thus lives far within his limits; he possesses powers of various sorts he habitually fails to use."

Isn't that the truth!  Alleged "impossibilities" are opportunities for our capacities to be stretched.

 2.      Her spirit rejoiced in God, my Savior.

 3.      She recognized the God’s blessing upon her and her unworthiness.  She was humble.

 4.      She recognized that the recognition from people may come from God’s blessing.

 5.      She honored the Lord for his character and mighty acts.

 6.      She recognized his strength in the miracle working power he possessed.  She recognized his strength in bringing down those who oppose him.

 7.      She recognizes his glory for those who are humble.

 8.      She recognizes his care and provision for those who are in need.

 9.      She recognizes the Lord’s help for his chosen people.

1Pet 2:9 (NIV) But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

 10. She recognizes the Lord remembers his mercy and promise to the people who now belong to him.
