December 10, 2000     When God came to the Shepherds    Luke 2

By Ronald E. George Jr. at the Fayetteville Baptist Church

When God Came He wanted all people to know.  He wants you to know this message.

When God Came He told the Shepherds.  Why did he tell the shepherds?  Because Jesus is the Great Shepherd.  He comes to all people including those who are watching their sheep.  In whatever condition, place, and time of life he comes to you.  When God came he sent his angels to tell the story, so that men would know that this was the real thing.  He sends His Spirit to tell you today that this message is for you.

Scripture Text:  Luke 2:8 (KJS) And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. {watch: or, the night watches} 9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. 10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. 12 And this [shall be] a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. 15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. {the shepherds: Gr. the men the shepherds} 16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. 17 And when they had seen [it], they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. 18 And all they that heard [it] wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

 The angelic sermon:

 1.      Don’t be afraid.  What do you fear?  Nothing?  Then why won’t you listen to the angelic message?  Have you become a Christian?  What are you afraid of?  Then won’t you become one today?  Have you become a member of the church?  What do you fear?  Is God big enough to overcome your fears?  Do you believe?  Will you listen to his message?  God says fear not.  If you are listening to God and following his direction in your life then you will have no worries.  Hear him today.  Follow him today.

 2.      I bring you good news that will bring you great joy. Could you use some good news?   Your Savior has come.  He is Christ the Lord.  God has come for you.  Could you use some good news?  God loves you so much that he came to you.  You can know him and his joy.  Could you use some joy?  Then hear this.  God knows you and loves you and wants to be known by you.

 3.      He was born as a baby in Bethlehem.  Why Bethlehem?  To fulfill God’s promise to David.  God has made a commitment to you.  He will keep his promises.  He is one of us.  He is with us.  God will do what he said he will do.  He will fulfill every promise that He has made to you.  Even though Joseph and Mary lived in Nazareth, the child was born in Bethlehem.

 4.      He is lying in a feed trough and wrapped with cloths.  Why a feed trough?  No room.  He came but was not received by many.  They did not recognize him.  People did not compassion for others.  So, when the Lord came he came as one of those that others don’t recognize.  This is your sign that this is the real thing.  He was lying in a feed trough.

 5.      Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace and good will to men.  Do you need some peace and good will?  Would you take some home?  We have plenty to spare.  The good will we have is what we all need to receive from each other.  It’s when we are nice to others even when they don’t deserve it.  It’s called Mercy and Grace that came from God to us.  Now as believers we need to give it to others who need it.  If you have some then you can give it.  If you are in need today, then you need to hear the angelic message.  If you have ever wronged someone else then you need some.  If you are having trouble with forgiveness, peace, and good will then you need to listen to the angelic message today.

 The Shepherd response:

 1.      Let’s go see for ourselves what the Lord has made known to us.  Have you seen for yourself what the Lord has made known unto you.  Aren’t you surprised that the Lord has made it known unto you.

 2.      They hurried.  What’s all the rush about.  He may be gone.  You might miss him.  Come right away and don’t delay, because this is a once in a lifetime experience.  He is really here for you.  Have you come to see?

 3.      They found him.  He is here.  Have you found him?  Will you come today to see for yourself?

4.      They became instant good news men.  They told everyone what they had seen and heard concerning Jesus.  CNN would have been proud of these shepherds.

 5.      The Response of The People:  Have you considered the message?  He is here.  He is here for you.
