Sept. 16, 2001am   TRUST  Proverbs 3

By Ronald E. George Jr. at the Fayetteville Baptist Church

Will we still trust the Lord even when things aren’t all peaches and cream?  In recent days we have witnessed the worst tragedy to strike our country.  Terrorists have attacked our country with deadly force.  These people have lived among us and now have become deadly enemies.  Faceless enemies with cowardly actions have tried to put fear into our hearts, but as JFK put it, “the only thing we have to fear, is fear itself.”

In the disaster, suicide terrorist took the lives of innocent people so that they may achieve the greatest reward their god has to offer.  God asks us to pick up our cross and follow him.  He calls us to give our lives so that others may live.  He wants us to become a living sacrifice.   Our God, who is the only true God, calls on us to trust Him above all.  Even all of our sophisticated technological advances cannot protect us as He can.  The protection He gives covers all dangers including eternal.

How can we continue in the midst of such uncertainty to live and serve God?  The answer is clearly given from the words of the Lord.

Here are some of the recent headlines:  “All their resources to conquer the enemy.

America Under Attack.  An American Tragedy.  Is this war?”  Life goes on, but will it be business as usual? How can we continue to live without recognizing our need of God? How can we continue to live, to work, to raise our children, and to thrive in a world that is full of uncertainty?  There is only one way to go.  Go with the Lord.

Scripture Text:  Prov 3:5 (KJS) Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. 7 Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. 8 It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.

Trust in the Lord:  Trust is faith, belief, hope, conviction, confidence, expectation, reliance, and dependence.  This is dependence.  Lean not unto thine own understanding.  This is Trust.  The question for today is: will we trust the Lord?

 T.     Try God.   Prov 3:5 (KJS) Trust in the LORD with all thine heart;  Let Him become your God.  Give to Him your heart.  Give Him an opportunity to be your God.  Don’t just go halfway with the Lord.  You must go all the way with God to experience how He can care for you.  God is a jealous God and He won’t allow you to serve Him and the god’s of this world.  This would be comparable to a man who doesn’t care if his wife is faithful.  God cares and loves you too much to allow you who would be his to destroy yourself.  Come to Him and try His love and care.  Give Him a chance to protect and provide for you.  He can provide for you like no other.  This week I have experienced how much we need one another as I have been trying to take care of my wife who has recently had surgery.   You have helped to take care of us by providing our evening meals.   We need one another, and  we need the Lord.  Try God.  Let Him give you what you need.

 R.    Rest on Him with all your fear and worries.  and lean not unto thine own understanding.  Lean on Him not your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge Him, then He will direct your paths.    Resting in the Lord is like sitting in your favorite chair or recliner.  You flop down and put all your weight on it.  Flop down on God and put all your weight on Him.  He is strong enough to handle the pressure.  He won’t fold up and fall under the pressure.  He longs to feel your weight.  In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths.  Follow His plan all the way not part of the way.  If go part of the way and stop to travel another path you may find yourself in a place where you don’t want to be.  Put all your weight on Him.  In all your ways acknowledge Him, and then He will direct your paths.

 U.    Use His Word and Wisdom.  7 Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.   Lean not unto your own understanding.  We can’t understand all the problems.  The Lord our Heavenly Father understands all of the ways of our lives.  Use His guidance for your life not your own or someone else’s advice.  Where we lived on Main Street in Sutton, WV, we often were asked to give directions to those who were searching for the right way.  I remember one fellow who stopped to ask because someone else up the road had told him that this road was the way, but when he got to the end of the road he found that it was nearly impossible for him to get his RV through.  Someone had told him the wrong way.  Who are you going to trust?  You will have to trust someone.  Why not trust someone who is reliable, trustworthy, and caring.  He wants to show you the right way, but we have to trust Him by following the way that He says is the best way for us to travel.  We have to use His Word and wisdom.  Let Him direct your paths.  Stop and ask for his direction

 S.     Stand with the Lord.  fear the LORD, and depart from evil.  Fear Him and depart from evil.  God is still in control even when the storms of life come our way.  The question is, “Will we stand with Him?”  He has never let you down so why start to worry now?  He is still watching over you and me so that He knows about every little thing.  Stand with Him.  Fear the Lord and depart from evil.  From a song by Twila Paris:  “God is in control, there is no power above or beside Him.  He is still in control.”  Fear the Lord more than we fear the evil of this world.  Decide to come over to His side today and cast all you care on Him because He cares for you.

 T.     Take His blessings into your life. 8 It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.   He will be marrow to your bones.  Health and marrow are two of the things in this life that we have continued to take for granted.  We don’t realize how important they are until they are gone.  We have taken our carefree American dream for granted.  Until my wife’s recent surgery we realized how blessed we have been when it comes to our health.  When we stand with the Lord He doesn’t promise us a bed of roses, but what he does promise is the word given in   Romans 8:28  And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to [his] purpose.  The health and marrow that God wants to give comes to those who Try Him, Rest in Him, Use His Word and wisdom, and Stand with the Lord in all of their ways.  Take Him and His health into your life.  Go all the way with the Lord.  Who are we going to trust in this life of uncertainty?  Will you trust in the Lord with all of your heart, mind, and soul?  You can overcome the fear of attack and the fear of death with the fear of the Lord.  Rest in Him today and give your life totally to Him.  Trust Him who cares for your life and soul.  Let Him bring his health and marrow to your life and bones.  He cares for you like no other.  He died for you.  Take his blessings into your life.
