Jan 6, 2002am:   “Rainy Days and Sundays”    Psalm 72

A New Year’s Prayer / Communion

By Ronald E. George Jr. at the Fayetteville Baptist Church

If rainy days and Mondays always get you down, then rainy days and Sundays ought to lift you up.  God can lift you up and He will lift you up if you will call out on Him.  Here is a prayer for the New Year.  This is a prayer of help.  We have not because we ask not.   Through the prayer of the Psalmist we can see how to pray a prayer that would lift you up.  This is believed to be a prayer of Solomon for his own help.  Will we ask God to help us into the New Year?  Here is prayer that can make a difference, because God can make a difference.

Scripture Text:  Psalm 72:1 Give the king your justice, O God, and your righteousness to a king's son. 2 May he judge your people with righteousness, and your poor with justice. 3 May the mountains yield prosperity for the people, and the hills, in righteousness. 4 May he defend the cause of the poor of the people, give deliverance to the needy, and crush the oppressor. 5 May he live while the sun endures, and as long as the moon, throughout all generations. 6 May he be like rain that falls on the mown grass, like showers that water the earth. 7 In his days may righteousness flourish and peace abound, until the moon is no more.

72:10 May the kings of Tarshish and of the isles render him tribute, may the kings of Sheba and Seba bring gifts. 11 May all kings fall down before him, all nations give him service. 12 For he delivers the needy when they call, the poor and those who have no helper. 13 He has pity on the weak and the needy, and saves the lives of the needy. 14 From oppression and violence he redeems their life; and precious is their blood in his sight.

 A New Year’s Prayer.

1.      Give Justice to us, so that we can give it to all.  Do we want to be fair in all our ways towards others?

A student told about a famous lecturer who came to the college he attended.  The lecturer spoke about feeding the people of India.  He listed several good reasons for doing so, such as more men would be employed, friendly relations with other countries would be established; in addition, he would continue to be in the good graces of the Indian people and of the government. During the informal discussion the oldest and most revered professor at the college asked, "But, Doctor, don't you think maybe we ought to feed them just because they're hungry?"  That is the question of goodness and justice.  That is the question a Christian asks.

2.      Give Righteousness to our children.  Do we want to live pleasing to God in the New Year?

3.      Help us to Judge people in the right way.  Help us to think of others in a good way.  Thus we are judging them for their benefit, not their detriment.

4.      Help us to treat the poor fairly.  Help us to be kind in all our dealings with all people and especially those who don’t have material possessions.

Result is:  When the we do what is right then the mountains yield prosperity and the hills fruitful.  Gal. 6:7-8 says that you will reap what you sow, and if we sow the things of God then we will reap everlasting life.  This is the spring of the spiritual year.  What will we sow?  We will reap.  This year if we have sown seeds of good fruit then we will reap.  The Psalmist recognizes the harvest of the good seed he has sown.

  1. Help Us to defend the poor and rescue their children and to crush their oppressors.  We will take a stand for what is right.

6.      May we live as long as the sun shines and as long as the moon continues in the skies.  Yes, forever.

7.        May we our lives be as refreshing as the springtime rains like the showers that water the earth.  May there be abundant prosperity until the end of time.

Yes, But How?  This Prayer is a tall order.  How can we do it?

May our help come from the King of Kings…

May we all bow before Him and bring Him our offerings.

May all kings and all nations bow before Him in service.

Why does He do this?  He does this because He loves us and He has redeemed us.

God gives all the resources we need to live abundantly.

God delivers the needy, the poor, and those who have no helper.

God has pity and compassion.

God saves the lives of the needy.

In God’s sight precious is your blood.  So He gave His instead.  Have you recognized His gift and received Him as your God.  He wants to be your Savior.  Receive Him today and His salvation.  Receive this bread and this cup in recognition of His sacrifice for your sin.
