February 10pm, 2002  The What of Worship  Isaiah 6

By Ronald E. George Jr. at the Fayetteville Baptist Church

  Worship Series Number 2

What is worship?  Giving ourselves to someone or something in adoration and devotion. Someone is worthy of our selves.  What we worship is what we think of more than anything else.  It is what we want more than anything else.

     To worship is:

      To quicken the conscience by

         the holiness of God.

To feed the mind with the

         truth of God.

      To purge the imagination with

         the beauty of God.

      To open the heart to

         the love of God.

To devote the will to the

         Purpose of God.    --William Temple

Let the one who would worship God open his mouth in praise, his heart in receptivity, his mind in contemplation, his purse in dedication, and his hand in fellowship. - Keith Huttenlocker

Scripture Text is Isaiah 6:1-8

Isai 6:1 (KJS) In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. {his...: or, the skirts thereof} 2 Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. 3 And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, [is] the LORD of hosts: the whole earth [is] full of his glory. 4 And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke. 5 Then said I, Woe [is] me! for I am undone; because I [am] a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts. { Heb. cut off} 6 Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, [which] he had taken with the tongs from off the altar:   7 And he laid [it] upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged. 8 Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here [am] I; send me.

What is worship?

Key Verse is 5 Then said I, Woe [is] me! for I am undone; because I [am] a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.

1.      Worship is Seeing God.    Have you seen the Lord?  Will you see Him face to face? How do we see God? Do we see Him as our King?   See his holiness and his glory.  See His desire to see us in the worship and to have fellowship with us.

2.      Worship is Seeing God as He is.  He was high and lifted up.  Is He in our lives.  He is far above anything we could see or experience in this life.  He is the highest.

3.      Worship is seeing or recognizing the Holy One.  Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord.  Holiness is the need of nothing, the want of nothing, and the presence of completeness.  We must realize the presence of the power of sin that creates a hole in ourselves so that we are missing what we were created to have.  God on the other hand needs nothing because He is self-existent.  He depends on nothing and no one for His creation and continued existence.  He should be honored because He is holy, holy, and holy.   Needing nothing and no one He is.

4.      Worship is seeing the glory of God in the whole earth.

1Chr 16:29 (KJS) Give unto the LORD the glory [due] unto his name: bring an offering, and come before him: worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.

5.      Worship is being moved by the awesome power of God.  When was the last time you were moved by God?  When was the last time you allowed God to change your plans for your life?

6.      Worship is recognizing who we are.  I am a man of unclean lips and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips.

7.      Worship is recognizing your need for cleansing.  Receiving cleansing from God is a vital part of worship.  I John 1:9  If we confess our sin He is faithful and just to forgive and cleanse us of all sin.

8.    Worship is hearing God’s call to go.  God looks for someone to go for Him.  Will you be the one today who will go?  How real is He to you?

9.      Worship is going as He has called.

The Result of Worship..  A new man was Isaiah now that he was cleansed.

Do we hear the calling of God?  Our desire to go where God wants us to go.

Have we come to the altar of God for our cleansing?  Before we can come into his presence fit for service.

Rev. 4: 11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.   It brings God pleasure when we worship him.   Will you worship Him now?
