March 17pm  (Youth Sunday) A Telling Savior   Mat. 19:16-22

By Ronald E. George Jr. at the Fayetteville Baptist Church

(At the end of this sermon is a quiz that handed out as the sermon began.  I then went through the quiz with those who were there.  Each point of the quiz represents another point of the sermon.  Hand out the quiz and make sure that there are plenty of pencils in the pew racks for the people to use during the answering part. ) (Jesus shows the way.)  Jesus told the rich young man.  This is show and tell.

Here is the story of Richie Rich.  He was a rich young man who seems to have had all that he wanted with one exception.  He didn’t have satisfaction about his soul.  He was unsure about what would happen to him when he died.

Scripture Text:  Matt 19:16 (KJS) And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? 17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? [there is] none good but one, [that is], God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. 18 He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, 19 Honour thy father and [thy] mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 20 The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet? 21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go [and] sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come [and] follow me. 22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.

Everybody wants to go to heaven.  How are we going to get there?

A.  There are a multiple of ways to go to a place where you have never been.  How would you get there?   Be sure to make the best choice.

a.  Ask someone to tell you the way.

b.  Look at the map.

c.  Take a chance and try to make it on your own.

d.      Look on the Internet.

e.      Ask someone who has been there before to take you.

Who has the answer?  Jesus has the answer.  He is the answer.  Raise your hands if you know the answer.

He said:  “Keep the commandments.”  Agree with the Lord.  Go with the Lord.  He gave the commandments to show who He is.  He is the Lord of all life.  All those who want to live must go with Him.

Would you give away all that you have to go to heaven with Jesus?

Would you give your self?

1.  What about choice   “a. Ask someone who has been there before to tell you the way”?  What if they are wrong?  What if they tell you the wrong way?  What if you forget the way or get it wrong?

2.  What about choice   “b.  Look at the map”?  The Bible is the map to eternal life.  It can be a very difficult book to understand unless someone tells you the way.  You might misunderstand and not go to heaven and have eternal life.

3.      What about choice  “c.  Take a chance and try to make it on your own”?  Would you really want to chance it?  This is the most important choice you make in your life.  There can be no make up exams and no second chances.  You have to get it right the first time.

4.      What about choice  “d.  Look on the Internet”?  The Internet is full of stuff.  Some of it is good and some of it is wrong.  How will you know the right answer?

5.  What about choice  “e.  Ask someone who has been there before to take you”?

What did Jesus say was the right way?  Sell all you have and give it to the poor.  In other words give all you have to God.  Give yourself to the Lord.  Give to Him all that you have and all that you are.  Will you give it all to the Lord?  Then you may go to heaven.

B.  What did Jesus tell the rich young man about the way to go heaven or have eternal life?

  1. Obey the commandments.
  2. Be the best you can be.
  3. Go to church.
  4. Look on the Internet.
  5. Obey the commandments and sell all you have and give it to the poor.

C.  Why did Jesus tell the rich young man to obey the commandments and sell all he had and give it to the poor?

  1. He knew that the man had more money that he could use.
  2. He wanted to teach the young guy a lesson.
  3. He wanted him to help out the poor.

     d.  He wanted him to trust Him (Jesus) completely for salvation.

Will we trust Jesus to give us eternal life?  Many are depending on earthly things to get them a heavenly ticket.  Many are depending on their earthly abilities such as keeping the commandments.  Many are depending on their earthly wealth to make it.  Many are just hoping for the best and have no real plan to go.  But if we know that there is a heaven shouldn’t we make plans to go.  All on earth will pass away so we know that we must be ready and make plans.  The rich young man knew even though he was rich he would have to die, so he was making plans.  Are you?  Will you tonight?  You don’t have to have a bunch of money to give away to the poor.  If that was the case then you could buy a ticket to heaven.  But there aren’t any tickets to heaven but there is a way.  John 14:6 Jesus said, “He was the way, the truth, and the life.  No man can go to the Father except by me.”  Will you go with Jesus?  Then you have the answer.  It is Jesus.
