March 24 pm    A Servant Savior   John 13:1-17

By Ronald E. George Jr. at the Fayetteville Baptist Church

Who was the Servant Savior?  Why would He choose to wash their feet?  He loved His own.  Do we?

Love is the motivation of the servant.  Love to the end.  It is a non-conditional and never-ending love.  He knew where He was from and He knew where He was going.  Do we?  He took on the clothes of servant hood.  Will we? He washed the disciples feet.  Will we?  Will the Lord wash us completely?  Are we all clean?  If Jesus has washed us, then will we be willing to wash others?

If we will wash one another’s feet then the promise of happiness is given to all.  The path to God’s rewards is through the suffering of His servants.   He washes the feet.  (Jesus is the servant-King).  Would you become a servant disciple?

Scripture Text:   John 13:1 (KJS) Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end. 2 And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's [son], to betray him; 3 Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God; 4 He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. 5 After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe [them] with the towel wherewith he was girded. 6 Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet? 7 Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter. 8 Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me. 9 Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also [my] hands and [my] head. 10 Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash [his] feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all. 11 For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean. 12 So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you? 13 Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for [so] I am. 14 If I then, [your] Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. 16 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. 17 If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.

A.  Will we be washed and served by the Lord?

  1. Would we be saved, served, and washed by the Lord

  1. Would we be continually washed?  Not all over but just our feet.  I John 1:9
  2. Would you allow Him to serve you?  The washing of the water and the Word of God is the cleansing that we need for our souls.  This is the gift of life and continued abundant living.  Will we continue to allow the Lord to wash our feet?

B. Will we wash and serve others?  The Lord continues to wash, serve, and save through those that He puts into the world.

  1. Will we wash others?  Will we forgive others their sins as the Lord has forgiven us?

  1. Will we serve others?  Are we willing to put on the apron of service and give ourselves to those who God puts into our lives?

  1. Will we save others?  We will save others as the Lord works through us.  He is the Savior with the cleansing blood, but we are the pipes that He uses to send out the light of the truth.

The Servant Savior has set us the example.  We are to serve others as the Lord has.  Will we commit ourselves to a life of servant hood?  Will we commit ourselves to the Lord who made the ultimate commitment for us?  Those who wish to shine the light of salvation to the world must shine it through service.  As He served, will we become servants?
