By Ronald E. George Jr. at the Fayetteville Baptist Church

True or false:

1.  The survivor is the one who survives the tests and wins the million dollars.

2.  The one who dies with the most toys wins.  The winner is the one who has the million dollars.

3.  The way to happiness is to have all the earthly possessions you can get.

4.      Wealth is not necessarily a sign of God’s blessings likewise poverty is not necessarily a sign of God’s curse.

5.      It is hard for a rich man to enter into God’s kingdom.

Scripture Text:  Luke 16:19 There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: 20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, 21 And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; 23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. 25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. 26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that [would come] from thence.

Lazarus was a very poor beggar who probably a leper, but God had not deserted him.  Even though he was a beggar and very sick he had not been deserted by the Lord.

Care from God comes in many different shapes and sizes.

1.      God provided for Lazarus in his physical condition.  The dogs licked his sores for healing.  The angels ministered to him in his death.

2.      God wants to use you to care for others.  The rich man missed his opportunity to care for Lazarus.  Our time and opportunity here is limited.  Don’t miss your chances to help others in the name of the Lord.  God will use someone or something to minister to others.  This is why we are here.  We are here at this time with the possessions we have to help others in His name.

3.      God provided for Lazarus in his spiritual condition.  The angels came to carry him to Abraham’s bosom.  This is paradise.  This is the place that Jesus went to when He died.  He promised the thief on the cross who believed that today they would be together in paradise.  This is the eternal place of rest and care for those who have placed their faith in the Lord.

4.      God sent someone to tell Lazarus about Him and heaven.  Lazarus had believed and was cared for by someone who told him about the Lord.  Lazarus had given his life to God.  God had received him and given him eternal life.

5.      God provided for Him in this life and through eternity.  Although it seems that the poor beggar Lazarus had not been provided for truly God had taken care of him.  Lazarus was a poor rich man.  He was a citizen of heaven who was just passing through this land.  Lazarus resided in Abraham’s bosom after his death.
