August 25am, 2002  Guard your Heart.    Matthew 15:10-20

By Ronald E. George Jr. at the Fayetteville Baptist Church

On Guard.  Watch out for there are a multitude of enemies that are out there trying to take your life.  What are the sources of dirt and germs that we must beware of?

I wonder how much time do we spend making sure that we are clean.  How much time do we spend making sure that the house is clean, the car is clean, and the kids are clean?  What is your annual budgeted amount for cleaning, beauty, and health care products?  Not only do we have to be clean we also have to make sure that we look a certain way.  Our hair has to be a certain color and we have to have it laying a particular way.  Beauty and health care consumes a great deal of Americans time and talent.

Most all of the cleaning that we are most concerned about is physical, but can there be another kind of dirt that is more important?

Mat. 15:10 And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand: 11 Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man. 12 Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying? 13 But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up. 14 Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch. 15 Then answered Peter and said unto him, Declare unto us this parable. 16 And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without understanding? 17 Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught? 18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. 19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: 20 These are [the things] which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.

What is it that makes a person unclean or dirty?  What are some of the germs that cause us to be unclean in the eyes of the Lord?  Beware of the dirt that gets on the heart.  What is dirt that makes a person unclean?  What is unclean?

Got used to it” Dirt.   We get used to the dark so that it isn’t that bad to be dirty or even eat dirt.   Is it bad to be dirty?  Why is it important to be clean?

Clean” Dirt.  Clean(beauty) is in the eye of the beholder.  Who is the beholder?  Who looks on the heart?  What are we looking at?  What should we be looking at?

“Just as long as no one else sees it”,  Dirt.  Clean and beauty is only skin deep.  Can you be clean on the outside?  Just get a face-lift.  It doesn’t really change who you are, but cleaning this dirt gives the impression that it is clean.  Are you concerned with the inner self or the heart?  Should you be?

“Holy” Dirt.  What about those who are more concerned with the outside than the heart?  Those who go to church and are filthy on the inside have what is known as holy dirt.  The point is they are still dirty and in need of a good bath in the cleansing power of the blood of the Lamb.

“Everyone else is doing it” Dirt.  Everyone else is doing it, so that must make it good.

“Doing it for the money” Dirt.    This is sin that is justified because you will loose your money if you don’t.  The love of money is the root of all evil.  Allow God to provide for your needs and walk with Him.  The guilt will eat up all of your enjoyment of any money you may get by living in sin.

“Self-Denial”  Dirt.  I am not really dirty.  Why did the Pharisees get upset?  The empty glass rings the loudest.  The Pharisees were empty and they told the story by their words that came from their heart.

Here is A Godly Cleaning and prevention system:

The physical part of the man is important but what is the most important?

Be careful of what you put into your heart and watch what comes out?

Prov 4:20  My son, pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words. 21 Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; 22 for they are life to those who find them and health to a man's whole body. 23 Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. 24 Put away perversity from your mouth; keep corrupt talk far from your lips. 25 Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you. 26 Make level paths for your feet and take only ways that are firm. 27 Do not swerve to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.

Matt 5:27 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: 28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

1Cor 11:28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of [that] bread, and drink of that cup.

1Joh 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us [our] sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Choose the way of the Lord for life.  What is his way?  Follow the ways of Jesus.

Don’t get caught up in all the traditions of men when you worship and serve the Lord.

Walk with the Lord not in the traditions of men.  We can go with the Lord.

If you don’t guard your heart then you will not be clean in the eyes of the Lord.

Uncleanness leads to death.  Rom. 6:23 says the gift of God is eternal life with the Lord.  To walk with the Lord is to put his thoughts in your heart or mind.

God wants you to be clean on the inside if you will go with Him.

We are constantly bombarded with the dirt of the world and misguided spiritual teaching.  Don’t be side tracked into majoring on the minors and miss the big picture.  It is clean and inside so it can’t be seen with the naked eye.  It is in the heart.  Will you guard your heart and keep it clean and healthy with the help of the Lord.  You can feel it when you need a bath.  We need to bathe today in the cleansing blood of the Lamb.  Can you feel it?  Will you allow Him to clean you up?
