September 8, 2002pm.  The Power of Two!    Matthew 18:15-20

By Ronald E. George Jr. at the Fayetteville Baptist Church

Did you hear the one about the pastor who loved to golf?  It seems he woke up on a Sunday morning, a beautiful morning for golf and decided to call in sick to the president of the church council. So that he wouldn't be seen, he drove 40 miles to unfamiliar country and registered to play a round of golf. Since everyone in that neck of the woods went to church, he was alone at his tee time, but that was perfectly alright with this preacher who was seeking anonymity.   As he lined up his first shot, St. Peter leaned over to God and said, "Say, you're not going to let him get away with this are you?"      God sighed and responded, "I guess not."  Just then the preacher smacked the ball and it took off in supersonic flight, lifting up straight and true and with distance. It landed 400 yards later, bounced, dribbled and then rolled on to the green, across it and into the cup for a 430 yard hole-in-one.  St. Peter turned at looked at God, "That's what you call justice, that's divine retribution?"   With a twinkle in the eye, God answered, "Who's he going to tell?"  From Bible Illustrator.

How important is it that we get together?  Even the Lone Ranger had Tonto.

Adam and Eve raised a little Cain.

Elijah and Elisha preached God’s message and overcame the power of the corrupt kingdom of Ahab and Jezebel.

Paul and Silas evangelized Asia Minor.

Noah and his wife saved all of humanity.

Aquilla and Priscilla taught Apollos.

Jonah and a whale revived Nineveh.

Moses and Aaron delivered a nation.

Samson and Delilah taught us the dangers of doubt and lust.

James and John among the first to see the glory of the King of kings.

Abraham and Sarah taught us how to believe and have a miracle child.

Titus and Timothy gave us a whole new perspective on pastoring.

Joseph and Mary invited God to enter the world through their lives.

Zachariah and Elizabeth’s had a son who(John) prepared the way of the Lord.

The Mary’s were the first to proclaim the news of the risen Lord.

Peter and John ran to see for themselves the empty tomb.

Scripture Text: Mat. 18:15 Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. 16 But if he will not hear [thee, then] take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. 17 And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell [it] unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican. 18 Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. 19 Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. 20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

The Importance of maintaining the harmony.  Why Two?  Why not one?  God, the Father, the Son, and the Spirit show us that we were designed to work together. Since the day the Lord took a part of Adam’s side to create the helper fit for him, we have been destined to work together with another.  The ability to work together illustrates the power of the Lord at work in our lives.  If we can’t get along and work together it shows that have yet to submit us and our wills to the Lord and to the others that God has placed in our lives.  When we get together we are as we were created to be.  We have submitted ourselves to the Lord.

Whatsoever you get on earth will be in heaven.

What you let loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.

If two agree then it will be done.  James 5:14  Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15  And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. 16  Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.

If two or three are together then the Lord is in the midst.

1Cor 5:4  In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,

1.      Be Encouraged because you have another.  You are not alone.  Don’t be discouraged when there is not a large number.  Are numbers the goal or is serving and knowing the Lord.

2.      Be Thankful for Two.  You have someone else and you have the Lord.  Be with God and you can be together with one another in unity.  The of two of you are multiplied by God when you get together.

3.      Be Determined to work together in Harmony.  Endeavor to keep the peace.  It just doesn’t happen.  It has to be maintained and worked through.  If the peace isn’t worked on then it will not happen.

4.      Be Ware of the Importance of harmony and unity.  Harmony is when everyone does his or her part together.  What ever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.

5.      Be Ware of the Presence and Power of the Lord.  When two or three get together in my Name the Lord says that He is in the middle.  If you will get together with the Lord then you will be going with the Lord’s direction in your life.

6.      Be committed tonight to work together with the Lord and with one another to get His job accomplished.  Whether there is two, twenty-two, or two hundred God will use all those who will work together with Him and with one another.  Will you be committed to God’s work in God’s way.
