May 11, 2003am    I hear you, Mother!   John 2:1-11

By Pastor Ron George Jr. at the Fayetteville Baptist Church in Fayetteville, WV

A teacher put this question to little John in the arithmetic class.  "John, suppose your mother made a peach pie and there were 10 of you at the table. . . your mother and father and eight children. . . how much of the pie would you get?"  "A ninth, Ma'am," was the prompt answer.  "No John. Now pay attention," said the teacher.  "There are 10 of you. Ten, remember.  Don't you know your fractions?"  "Yes Ma'am," was the swift replay of little John, "I know my fractions, but I know my mother, too.  She'd say that she didn't want any pie."  Mothers, you unselfishness makes an impression on the little ones.

What was the best advice that your mom ever gave you?  I hear you, Mom.  Here is the best advice that a Mom ever gave.  She said to do whatever Jesus tells you to do.  “I hear you Mom.”

Scripture Text:  John 2:1 (NIV) On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus' mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus' mother said to him, "They have no more wine." 4 "Dear woman, why do you involve me?" Jesus replied. "My time has not yet come." 5 His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you." 6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim. 8 Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet." They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, "Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now." 11 This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.

1.      His time has come so will you involve him in your life and your affairs?  The time is right.  Mother is always pushing her children to do what she knows they can do.                My mother was continually urging me to get on with it.  Whether it was mowing the grass or getting a job she continually urged me on.  I am thankful that she urged me to allow Jesus into my life.  Have you opened the door to your life for Jesus?

2.      You are the jars needing to be filled with water.  The Lord wants you.  The master has come and needs you to be involved in his work and in his church.  It is time for the church of the one true living God to make it seen and heard.  It is time for the light of the glorious gospel to be seen in the life of the community.  It is time for the church, which is made by the Lord to be used in his service.  Are you ready?

3.      You can be filled with the Holy Spirit if we will give ourselves to him.

2Cor 4:6  For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. 7 But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.

4.      You must believe that He can do the miraculous.  Have faith to allow him to work in your life.  The disciples put their faith in Jesus when they saw the miracles that he performed.

5.      Will you let Him supply your needs?  You could fill your own needs or you can enjoy all the best that the Lord can give you.  Will you go with Him?

6.      He will always give you the best of life.  Jer. 29:11  For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

7.      Will you take Mom’s advice?  Then will you do what ever He tells you to do?  Let Him reveal his glory in your life.   Our mission is to live our lives everyday so that Christ can be seen in us.  When his glory is revealed in your life then he will be seen in you.

8.       Has your time come?  As Mordecai said to Esther in  Esth 4:14  For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father's family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to royal position for such a time as this?"  Now is your time as a Mom to lead your children, family, and friends to the Lord.  Now is the time for you to let the Lord work in you and through you to reveal his glory to all those who would see.  Would you involve Jesus in your life and in the life of the others in your world?
