November  2, 2003am   Basic Training III -- A Good Surrender.   Matthew 26

By Ronald E. George Jr. at the Fayetteville Baptist Church

When do you win when you surrender?  When you surrender to the Lord.   To triumph is surrender.  Can you win and surrender at the same time?   When is it good to surrender?  Have you surrendered to the will or desires of the Lord?

            I remember as a boy having a hard time surrendering.  Often I would stubbornly continue to demand my will and my way.  Then when I got it, I wasn’t happy.  What about you?  Have you learned the fine art of surrender?  It can be called an art and it can be your greatest asset.   Remember this event in the life of our Savior.

Scripture Text:   Mat. 26:37  And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy. 38 Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me. 39 And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou [wilt]. 40 And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour? 41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed [is] willing, but the flesh [is] weak. 42 He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done. 43 And he came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy. 44 And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. 45 Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take [your] rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

Some folks have a hard time surrendering.

Hiroo Onoda holds the honor of the last Japanese soldier from WWII to surrender, finally packing it in in 1974. Attempts were made to persuade Hiroo to surrender, including appeals from relatives. It took his former commanding officer to convince Hiroo the war was over. He had been holding out Lubang Island in the Phillipines. After spending some time in Japan, he retired to a ranch in Brazil.

Surrender:  defined is 1 a : to yield to the power, control, or possession of another upon compulsion or demand <surrendered the fort> b : to give up completely or agree to forgo especially in favor of another
2 a : to give (oneself) up into the power of another especially as a prisoner b : to give (oneself) over to something (as an influence)
intransitive senses : to give oneself up into the power of another :

If you knew what the will of the Lord was, would you be willing to do it?

Why surrender?  Why not?  Why is this important and how does this apply to the life of the Christian?

Why should you surrender to the Father?

Because you can if you want to.

Because He knows the way and what is the best.

Because He wants the best for you.  Remember He loves you.

You may have to go without others by you will never be alone.

Would you go with the Father today?

All to Jesus I surrender.

All to Jesus, I surrender;
All to Him I freely give;
I will ever love and trust Him,
In His presence daily live.

I surrender all, I surrender all,
All to Thee, my blessed Savior,
I surrender all.

All to Jesus I surrender;
Humbly at His feet I bow,
Worldly pleasures all forsaken;
Take me, Jesus, take me now.

All to Jesus, I surrender;
Make me, Savior, wholly Thine;
Let me feel the Holy Spirit,
Truly know that Thou art mine.

All to Jesus, I surrender;
Lord, I give myself to Thee;
Fill me with Thy love and power;
Let Thy blessing fall on me.

All to Jesus I surrender;
Now I feel the sacred flame.
O the joy of full salvation!
Glory, glory, to His Name!

Words: Judson W. Van DeVenter, 1896:

The song was written while I was conducting a meeting at East Palestine, Ohio, in the home of George Sebring (founder of the Sebring Campmeeting Bible Conference in Sebring, Ohio, and later developer of the town of Sebring, Florida). For some time, I had struggled between developing my talents in the field of art and going into full-time evangelistic work. At last the pivotal hour of my life came, and I surrendered all. A new day was ushered into my life. I became an evangelist and discovered down deep in my soul a talent hitherto unknown to me. God had hidden a song in my heart, and touching a tender chord, He caused me to sing.

Music: Winfield S. Weeden, 1896 (MIDI, score). Weeden published a number of books of religious music, but this song must have been one of his favorites: its title was on his tombstone.
