Nov. 2, 2003pm   How Can you know His Will?   I Samuel 23

Basic Training IV by Ronald E. George Jr. at the Fayetteville Baptist Church

If you knew the will of God for your life, would you follow Him?  If you can answer yes to that question then the next question to ask is what is the will of the Lord?  How do you know His will for your life?  David wanted to know what the will of God is for his life?  We aren’t asking to predict the future like a magic 8 ball, but we are asking what does the Lord want in our life?

1Sam. 23:7 And it was told Saul that David was come to Keilah. And Saul said, God hath delivered him into mine hand; for he is shut in, by entering into a town that hath gates and bars. 8 And Saul called all the people together to war, to go down to Keilah, to besiege David and his men. 9 And David knew that Saul secretly practised mischief against him; and he said to Abiathar the priest, Bring hither the ephod. 10 Then said David, O LORD God of Israel, thy servant hath certainly heard that Saul seeketh to come to Keilah, to destroy the city for my sake. 11 Will the men of Keilah deliver me up into his hand? will Saul come down, as thy servant hath heard? O LORD God of Israel, I beseech thee, tell thy servant. And the LORD said, He will come down. 12 Then said David, Will the men of Keilah deliver me and my men into the hand of Saul? And the LORD said, They will deliver [thee] up. 13 Then David and his men, [which were] about six hundred, arose and departed out of Keilah, and went whithersoever they could go. And it was told Saul that David was escaped from Keilah; and he forbare to go forth. 14 And David abode in the wilderness in strong holds, and remained in a mountain in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him every day, but God delivered him not into his hand.

Why Should we be concerned about doing His Will?

Mat. 7:21  Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. 24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:

1John 2:17  And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

How can you know what the will of the Lord is for your life?

Be willing to do it no matter what it is.

Have you surrendered to the will of the Lord? You must surrender.

Be ready to ask for the answer (pray).

Have you asked the Lord?

Be open to the scriptures (study).

Have you read the scripture?

Be patient until you know.

Are you willing to wait?  Continue to serve in your position until you know the new way.

Be assured that God wants the best for you because He loves you.

Are you willing to trust the Lord’s decision for your life?

Be ready to follow the Circumstances

Is God in control?  Are you trusting?  Even if God leads through the circumstances, will you follow?

Be willing to take a chance on the nature of the Lord

Try something new.  God will make a way for you to escape.

 Be Looking for the Signs

David asked for a sign.  If God would show you a sign would you follow it?

Mark 8:11  And the Pharisees came forth, and began to question with him, seeking of him a sign from heaven, tempting him. 12 And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and saith, Why doth this generation seek after a sign? verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation.

If you ask for a sign ask for it in the right spirit.  Have the spirit of willingness to follow.

 Be Listening to the Advisors

Ask others who have already been there.

Be Ready to see the obvious  (A man of God was caught in a great flood.  By the time that he saw the flood, he didn’t have time to run away.  His only escape was to climb up on the roof of the house.  He climbed up on the roof and began to pray.  “ O, Lord please save me from this flood.”  Finally a boat came by to pick up the survivors of the flood.  But the man of God proclaimed proudly and with great conviction.  No thank you I will be fine.  I have prayed and the Lord is going to save me.  So, the boat and the rescuers reluctantly left the man of God.  The water continued to rise and the man of God continued to pray.  Finally another boat load of rescuers came over the flood to pick up the man of God.  No the man of God said, I can’t go I have to believe and pray and the Lord will save me.  The boat left.   The water was beginning to shake the foundations of the house, and the man of God prayed harder.  “Lord Save Me!”  Just then a helicopter appeared out of the clouds to pick up the man of God, but he refused to escape.  He knew the Lord was going to come to pick him up.  Finally the house gave way and the man of God drowned.  Being ushered into the presence of the Lord the man went straight to the throne.  He went up to God and asked seeing the Lord of all the heavens he asked Him why he hadn’t come to his rescue.  Then the Lord replied, “I sent a helicopter and two boats, but you refused to believe!”)
