Nov. 16, 2003 am   Thriving Under Attack?   Exodus 17:8-16

Basic Training VI  by Ronald E. George Jr. at the Fayetteville Baptist Church

After you choose to fulfill the desires of God in your life you will come under attack from the enemy.  This enemy will relentlessly pursue you and all those who seek to do the will of God in their life.   In this Biblical story from Exodus the enemy are called the Amalekites.  Now you might not remember the Amalekites, but they were the enemy of the people of the one true living God.   Who is the enemy that we face today?  The enemy is the same but names may have changed.  We won’t reveal the names today, but we will let you know that the devil, the world, and the flesh are the top three enemies that we face today.  Their goal is to destroy the man or woman of God who chooses to stand for the truth and live out their faith in such a way as to become a shining light to all those who live in the dark.  Is it blessings or battle or both?  Is it possible to thrive while being attacked by the enemy?

Exodus 17:8  The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim. 9 Moses said to Joshua, "Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands." 10 So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill. 11 As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. 12 When Moses' hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up--one on one side, one on the other--so that his hands remained steady till sunset. 13 So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword. 14 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Write this on a scroll as something to be remembered and make sure that Joshua hears it, because I will completely blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven." 15 Moses built an altar and called it The LORD is my Banner. 16 He said, "For hands were lifted up to the throne of the LORD. The LORD will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation."

Some Facts about being in the service of the one true living God…

You can be successful as a Christian.  Your success as a Christian doesn’t depend on your abilities, but on God’s power.  Even under attack you can continue to thrive in being a child of the King. God is waiting to give you the victory. To be successful you have to fight.  You have to become involved. You must persevere.

You will come under attack.   What is the nature of the attacks of the enemy today? Fighting in the battle means you will be making a great sacrifice.

You are the chosen.  The King of kings has chosen you to be his child and to be involved in His work.  He knows you and He know you can be whomever He can make you.

You Must Pray.  God is looking for someone to hold up their hands and call upon Him.

Here are the factors involved in winning the battle with the Lord!

God is the number one factor.  He is the creator and the originator of all life.  He is the one who has brought all these things together.

God’s leaders are a vital link to the success of the people under their leadership.  God’s leaders need someone to hold them up.

Your success will be remembered and it will make a difference in eternity.  You may feel that you aren’t being noticed but you can be sure that if you are following the Lord’s direction then you are being noticed.

There is no job that is too small to make a difference.  Could you hold up someone’s hands?  Everyone makes a difference in the work of the Lord.  Are you involved in following the Lord’s direction in your life?

You need to hang in there until the sun goes down or the battle is over.  Perseverance is another key factor in the Lord’s work.  Patiently continue to serve and pray that God will give you the victory.

Prayer is the key to unlocking the power of the only true living God.  Someone must touch the throne of the one true living God.  Who will pray?

The victory is in the hand of the Lord and He is our banner.  He will cause His people to become winners.  Some will pray, some will fight, but all will win in the spiritual battle with the Lord.

What enemy has attacked you?  The enemy comes in many different shapes and sizes.  Their goal is to thwart the people of God.  Whatever it takes the enemy will relentlessly pursue the saints.

Will you overcome?  Are you persevering?  Would you be willing to hold the hands of another?  Would you be willing to step out in service of the one true, living God?  You can thrive under attack through the strength of the Lord.  Is the Lord your banner?
