November 30, 2003   Are you ready for some dessert?  Rev. 22:8-15

By Ronald E. George Jr. at the Fayetteville Baptist Church

Will you receive your just desserts?  Have you heard that there is a reward?  We get rewarded all the time.  Do you like dessert?  Dessert is that part of the meal, that you get once you have endured the main course.  Dessert is the sweet stuff.  Why don’t we eat dessert first?  Why not just eat dessert and not eat any of the other stuff? Well, if we had just eat dessert then we would have become a giant piece of cake.  But since we have listened to our mothers then we have our dessert at the right time and in the right proportions.  Some want a big piece and some want just a bit.

There are many rewards in life.  We get rewarded for working with pay. We get rewards of good grades when we do the studying and pass the test.  In track when you when the race you receive a ribbon or a medal for the victory.  People will promise you things if will do what they want.  These are rewards.

Rewards come in many different shapes and sizes.  Have you ever heard someone say, “I hope you get what’s coming to you”?  This is called the just desserts.  This is what you deserve.  Some of these are good and some of these are bad.  Have you ever received punishment for disobedience?  Have you ever had your pay cut because you didn’t show up for work or lost your reward?  I remember when the main reason for going to work was the pay.  Now the main reason for going to work is the Lord.   He changes your perspective on the reason for living, working, and being.

Does God give rewards?  Will you receive your reward from the Lord?  Do you remember the following song lyrics by Fanny Crosby (Public Domain):

When Jesus comes to reward His servants, whether it be noon or night.  Faithful to Him will He find us watching, with our lamps all trimmed and bright?

If at the dawn of the early morning, He shall call us one by one.  When to the Lord we restore our talents, will He answer thee, “Well done”?

Have we been true to the trust He left us?  Do we seek to do our best?  If in our hearts there is naught condemns us, we shall have a glorious rest.

Blessed are those whom the Lord finds watching, in His glory they shall share.  If He shall come at the dawn or midnight, will He find us watching there?

Chorus:  O’ can we say we are ready, brother?  Ready for the soul’s bright home?  Say, will He find you and me still watching, Waiting, waiting when the Lord shall come?

Scripture Text:  Rev. 22:8  And I John saw these things, and heard [them]. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. 9 Then saith he unto me, See [thou do it] not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God. 10 And he saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand. 11 He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still. 12 And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward [is] with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. 13 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. 14 Blessed [are] they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. 15 For without [are] dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.

Facts about God’s rewards:

1.  The rewards will be given when He comes.  The time is at hand.  Time is almost up.  Time is up everyday for thousands of people around the world.  People are ushered into eternity to meet the Lord where they will be rewarded.  Yes, there is a time for the Second Advent but the coming of the Lord for many has already happened.

2.  Time will be up. There will not be second chances.  No where in the Bible is it taught that will have another opportunity like the one we have now.   There will not be time to change.  As the tree falls there it is.  If you are filthy you will be filthy.  If you are holy you will be holy.  If you are unjust you will be unjust.  If you are righteous you will be righteous, forever.

3.  He will come quickly to give his reward.  This is an urgent need.  We must obey quickly.  Time is running out.  Have you decided what you want for all eternity?  If you are thinking about changing there is still time.  Don’t wait too long.

How will we be rewarded?

1. Everyone will receive a reward.  Good, bad, and the ugly will be rewarded just as they deserve.  You will receive your just desserts.  Are you asking about Grace?  Grace is the free gift of God of eternal for all who believe.  After that comes the rewards that God promises to the faithful servants.  Those who are faithful to be who God has called you to be will be rewarded.  Don’t forget the reward for neglecting the Lord is to live eternally without Him in your life.

2.  Jesus is the first and the last.  What he says and does is final.  He is the end of the story.  He is the one and only.  He is the one who will give to each what they deserve.  But how can you deserve heaven?  By the grace of the living Lord who died in your place.  You will be rewarded because he died and paid your price for sin.  You have believed and received him into your heart.

3.  Blessed and Happy are those who do his commandments.  To be blessed now is to be blessed forever with the Lord in your life.  Worship God not the creation.  You will be honored because you have honored the Lord during your life.  You worshipped God with your time by coming to church and giving of your time, talents, and treasures to the work of the one true living God.  Sunday school teachers, deacons, and trustees will be rewarded for faithfully serving the Lord.  The Lord will reward all those who come faithfully to the services to honor the Him and giving yourself to others.  All those who tell others about Him and seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book, but remember the time is close by.

4.  They have the right to the tree of life. You have the right to eternal life.

5.  They may enter into the city of God.  You will live forever with the Lord.

Will you faithfully continue to serve the Lord?  Don’t get left out in the cold. Serve God and receive His reward.
