January 6, 2004am         Praise for the Past      Deuteronomy 32:1-8

By Ronald E. George Jr. at the Fayetteville Baptist Church

Think of time as an arrow.  The past is the fletching, the present is the shaft, and the future is the arrowhead.  Consider the past.  What do we have to praise the Lord for in the past year and the past time?  Will you tell the story?  What has God done for you?

Scripture Text:  Deut 32:1 Listen, O heavens, and I will speak; hear, O earth, the words of my mouth. 2 Let my teaching fall like rain and my words descend like dew, like showers on new grass, like abundant rain on tender plants. 3 I will proclaim the name of the LORD. Oh, praise the greatness of our God! 4 He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he. 5 They have acted corruptly toward him; to their shame they are no longer his children, but a warped and crooked generation.   6 Is this the way you repay the LORD, O foolish and unwise people? Is he not your Father, your Creator, who made you and formed you?  7 Remember the days of old; consider the generations long past. Ask your father and he will tell you, your elders, and they will explain to you. 8 When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance, when he divided all mankind, he set up boundaries for the peoples according to the number of the sons of Israel.

a.  Ask the congregation for praises for the past.  What has the Lord done for you?

b.      Praise the Lord for who He is.  He is God and the only true and living God.  There is none other.   He is the heavenly Father and our creator.  We are not some amazing mistake.  We are the design on an intelligent Creator.

c.      Praise the Lord for we have seen who He is.  He has shown us that He is great.  He is our rock that never fails.  His works are perfect and all His ways are just.  He is a faithful God who does no wrong, faithful and just is he.

d.      Praise the Lord for the past.  Ask the elders who the Lord is.  Remember the days of old.  Remember the history.

e.      Remember to proclaim the name of the Lord and who He is, because we remember the past.  We remember that He sent His one and only Son to become our sacrifice.  He has come into our lives and he has saved us.

f.        Remember what He has done in our past in our church and in our lives.  Praise the Lord for 150 years as a church.  Praise the Lord for bringing us together as a church.

g.      How will you repay the Lord?  Should you repay the Lord?  Would you repay the Lord?  Some have said what does the Lord need since He has everything.  The Lord wants you to know Him as you Lord and allow Him to be your God.  This is giving yourself to the Lord.  This is what the Lord wants.  He doesn’t need anything.  But He wants to help you to be who you were created to be.  He wants to be your God.  This new year would you give Him a tithe?  Would you consider giving Him yourself?
