March 7, 2004    Is the Offering for Today?   Malachi 3:7-11

By Ronald E. George Jr. at the Fayetteville Baptist Church

What is your offering?  Is it the money in the plate?  What do you offer to the Lord?  For some an offer is an attempt to purchase something, so you make an offer.  Then to complete the deal you give the offering as agreed to.  When it comes to worshiping the Lord, the offering takes on a different meaning.

From Dictionary. COM:  of·fer·ing

The act of making an offer.   Something, such as stock, that is offered.   A presentation made to a deity as an act of religious worship or sacrifice; an oblation.   A contribution or gift, especially one made at a religious service.   Contribution, gift, donation, present, and submission are all synonyms of offering.

Scripture Text:  Malachi 3:7  Ever since the time of your forefathers you have turned away from my decrees and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you," says the LORD Almighty. "But you ask, `How are we to return?' 8 "Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me. "But you ask, `How do we rob you?' "In tithes and offerings. 9 You are under a curse--the whole nation of you--because you are robbing me. 10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it. 11 I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not cast their fruit," says the LORD Almighty.

1Peter 2:4  As you come to him, the living Stone--rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him-- 5 you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

Why should we offer anything, because we can, because we should, and because He deserves it.  What will we offer to God?   Offer yourself time, talent, and treasures, which is all of you.   Can you afford to not give to God? God loves a cheerful giver.  You can’t out give God.  Bring all your tithes into the storehouse.  No one can out give God.   Give intentionally.  Why should we give our money to God?  Why does God want our money?  What is the offering for?  Is it really God’s money anyway?   How much should I give?  How often should I give?  Give because you choose to honor Him.

Bring to God your worship.

Bring to God your love and devotion.

Bring to God your life.

Bring to God your time, talent, and treasurers.

Bring to God your heart.

Bring to God your offering.

What will you bring today?

What is your offering to the only true living God?

The offering is still for today, if there are people who still want to make one.

Will you?
