June 13, 2004am    Life Training    Deuteronomy 6:1-12

By Ronald E. George Jr. at the Fayetteville Baptist Church

Can you remember any of the training you received as a child?  How were you trained?  What a difference it made in your life?  What training have you given your children or grandchildren?

Give your children the best.  Give them God.  Give your children a choice.  Give them God.  No God.  No choice.  Know God and choose life.  God cares about children.  God cares about His children.  God cares about you.

Scripture Text:  Deut 6:1  These are the commands, decrees and laws the LORD your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, 2 so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the LORD your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life. 3 Hear, O Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your fathers, promised you. 4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.   5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. 10 When the LORD your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you--a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build, 11 houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant--then when you eat and are satisfied, 12 be careful that you do not forget the LORD, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

Should we train our children?  For life?  What about death?

Before you can train you must be trained.  How can you give what you don’t have?

Here is what God wants you to do:  Do you want to hear it?  Have you heard it all before?  Do you already know it all?  Are you ready to accept God’s will and desires for your life?

You, your children, and their children should fear the Lord, as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands.

Result:  You and your children will receive long life as a result of fearing the Lord.

Hear and obey what the Lord says.

Result:  You and your children so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey.

Remember:   There is only One true living God.

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

Impress them on your children.  These must impress you first.

Wear the commandments and write the commandments.  Make them your life and God your God.  By following His commandments we are people of faith.

Talk about them everywhere.  Tie them on you and where them as symbols.  Write them on the doorframes and on the gates.  Remember them.

You will be blessed and then don’t forget them.

Remember that it is the Lord who has saved you.  He has delivered you out of Egypt and given you a heavenly home called the Promised Land.

What does the Lord want?

Know who the Lord is.

Remember who He is.

Keep and obey all that He says.

Teach the children who the Lord is.

Love the Lord with all of your heart and life.

Remember these in your hearts.  Be careful not to forget.  Don’t forget.  Don’t forget.  Don’t forget who the Lord is to you.  Give your children a choice, give them God.
