July 2004      Taking a Stand and Shining the Light!

By Ronald E. George at the Fayetteville Baptist Church

Recently I was asked to sign a letter to the editor of the Fayette Tribune.  I asked for the opportunity to have some input on the letter in question, but was not given the opportunity.  Consequently the letter was published without my signature, which gave a false impression on my view of the topic in question.  What was the topic?  The topic was homosexuality and homosexual marriages.  The following is the article I sent to the same news paper to let folks now where I am on this issue.  I hope you will read this and get the message that is related in our mission as a church.  This is my hope for writing and mailing this letter to you this month.  Here is the article.

The light of the world is Jesus.  We have been sent to shine the light to those who live in the darkness.  Many issues in this day and age have captured the attention of the churches.  The issues of homosexual marriages and homosexuality have been at the top of the heap in recent days.  Most believers in Southern WV would agree that the act of homosexuality and homosexual marriages are an abomination before the Lord.  We as Baptists would certainly agree with the Bible concerning this and all sin.  We believe the Bible, as revealed to us by the Holy Spirit, to be our final authority in all faith and practice.   God has given us the Bible to guide us to Him.  He calls us to repent and turn to Him.   We are to take a stand against sin, but the focus of our ministry should be to shine the light of Christ.  Why?  The problem is that people need the Lord.  There is a way that seems right to people and the end of this way is death.   This is why Jesus came and this is why we have been sent.  Without Christ we have no hope and are powerless to overcome the world and the sin that plagues us all.  Jesus is revealed in the Bible as a God who cares for all and died for all.  While we stand against sin, we should stand for the Lord and for those to whom we have been sent.  We stand with the people who live and work in God’s church to shine the light to those who live and die daily without the Lord.  Our mission is “to live our lives everyday, so that others can see Christ living in us”.  Let’s stand together to call sin by its name.  It is sin.  What is the cure?  We have the cure.  His name is Jesus.  Believers are called upon to shine the light.  The only way to win in the dark is to turn on the light.  Lets stand together to shine the light, so that people may see the Way, the Truth, and the Life.  The light we must shine is the love of Jesus.  He is the only One who can change people.  He is the only way we can make a difference in the world.  He is the only hope we have of seeing a permanent change take place that leads to everlasting life.  All humanistic attempts to cure this world of problems have come up empty.  We all need the Lord.  If you have believed and received the Lord would you share Him and His salvation with all you know?  This is our mission.  If you haven’t received Him, would you give Him a chance to give you His salvation?  This is our Hope.
