August 22, 2004pm    Go for the Gold!    I Cor. 9:24-27

How can you achieve excellence with the Lord?

By Ronald E. George Jr. at the Fayetteville Baptist Church

Currently the USA is number one in the medals with China close at our heels in the Summer Olympics.  How would you be ranked and judged in your Christian Life?  Would you want to be the best you can be?

Are we striving for the best in our Christian Life?

1Cor 9:24 (NIV) Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. 25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26 Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. 27 No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.

1.  Life is like a journey or a game.  The road you choose makes all the difference.

Choose to get into the game.  Choose to run the race well.  Choose to go for the gold.  Paul had chosen to run to get the prize.

Special note:  You must choose.  You cannot to serve God the devil.

1Cor 10:21  You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord's table and the table of demons.

22 Are we trying to arouse the Lord's jealousy? Are we stronger than he?

2.  Choose to Run to win.  Choose to Train for the gold and discipline yourself to be the best.  The off season is important.   It is when no one else is looking?  Train yourself to get the prize.  Train in private with the Lord.  Then when the time comes you will be ready for the test.  Whatever your event you must choose to give it your all to get the maximum blessing.  Be who God wants you to be.  Be faithful and consistent.  Be the Best that God can make you.

3.  Choose to win the crown.  We run to win a crown that will last forever.

4.  Choose to Run with purpose and keep your eyes fixed on the goal.

Self-sacrifice is the key.  Jesus is our example.  A man is no fool who gives away what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot loose.  Don’t Forget the Prize is yet to come.  What will keep you going?

Phil 3:14 (NIV) I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.  God will reward his servants.  We must discipline ourselves to have the faith to believe that we can win with the Lord if we continue to play on his team.  Anything that we may have to sacrifice is worth it.

5.  Who are the True Stars?  Recognize who you are as a member of God’s Team.

Phil 2:14 (NIV) Do everything without complaining or arguing, 15 so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe 16 as you hold out the word of life--in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing.
