October  24, 2004am   Break Out!    Matthew 14:23-33

By Ronald E. George Jr. at the Cotton Hill Men’s Fellowship

There are only two people in the whole world who have literally walked on the water.  Defying gravity these men were able to do what no one else could.  Only by the power of the Lord can anyone ever dare to dream of walking on the water.  How would you like to walk on the water?  Would you if you could?

People have said that you can walk on the water if you know where the rocks are.  But, I tell you today, that you can walk on the water if you know the Rock. Jesus is our rock.   He will hold you up and cause you to rise above the normal ways of the world and the normal life of the church.  Do you believe?  That is the question.

Mat. 14:22  Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23  And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone. 24 But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary. 25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. 26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. 27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. 28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. 29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.  31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth [his] hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? 32 And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased. 33 Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.

Jesus walks on the storms of life.  He invites us to go with Him.  What is walking on the water today?  Walking on the water for a Christian or a church is to do what you can’t possibly do.  What is it that you can’t do?  What is it that you should do?  What is it that God wants you to do?  He told the disciples to get in the boat and go.  First of all, have you got into the boat?  Peter was there.  Judas was there.  So were all.  But are you?

Peter wanted to join Jesus.   Peter saw the Lord walking on the water.  Jesus said come follow me and I will make you fishers of men.  Would you ask Jesus to allow you to go with Him on the water?  Why?  Because you can if you go with the Lord.  Peter wanted to go with the Lord.  To be with the Lord you must want to step out of the boat and walk on the water.  Walking on the water is going with the Lord to do things you have never done.  Doing the impossible by the power of the Lord.

He calls us to break out.   Break out of the pack.  The pack is those who are sitting on the porch or in the boat.  Run with the big dogs.  Take a chance to go where you’ve never gone before.  Go with God.  Break out and go with the Lord.

Walk out.  Step out.  Change or die.  It is much easier and safer to stay in the ship.  Nothing will ever be attempted if all possible objections must first be overcome.  The ship with the disciples represent the church.  We are all in the storm but for the most part we are secure and happy with the way things are.  We would rather not change.  We don’t want to upset the boat and take a risk.  If we don’t we will die.

Speak out.  Lord, Save me. Lord, save the church.  Unless we step out of the boat of status quo then the church will be sunk.  We must step out of the box and out of the safety of the ship to go out into the waves of the world were the people are to save them.  Most people who don’t go out find themselves in the boat of do nothing.  This is the boat that leads people to criticize and condemn those who step out.  It is also a place that leads people to die spiritually because they have missed the boat.  They could have walked on the water with the Lord but they chose to stay in the boat.

Live out.  Do you have faith?  Let’s see it.  When was the last time you exercised your faith?  Most of the time we never attempt anything that can’t be done on our own.  Do we want the Lord to help us to walk on the water?  Have you ever tried to do something with the Lord that you couldn’t do on your own?   That’s when you need the Lord.

Go out.  Peter usually gets criticized for walking on the water and sinking, but how many people have ever walked on the water?   Jesus and Peter are the only people who have ever accomplished this.  Most folks stay in the boat and are happy to do so.  Only those who believe can begin to go out to walk on the water.

Come out.  Come out of those waves in power of the Man from Galilee.  Go with the flow of the Holy Spirit of the Lord.  He is leading you to go with Him as a church and as an individual.  Ignore the cries of the world, which says to stay in the boat, and don’t rock it.  If it ain’t broke, break it.  Come out and experience walking on the water.

Jump out.   Water runs down hill and people sink when they try to walk on the water, but Jesus and Peter broke the natural laws and rose above the water.  Will we as a church rise above the natural ways of the world to be who we could be with the Lord?  When we jump out of the boat things begin to happen.

Give out.  Give up to the Lord and let Him save you, your family, your church, your community, and your world.

Do you need your faith?  Have you ever used it?  Use it or loose it.

Do you need the Lord to save you?  Then you have stepped out in faith.

Jesus has all you need.  What do you need?  What do you need as a Christian, a church, a husband, a father, a deacon, a pastor, a believer, and a Peter?  Walking on the water for us means that we step out in faith to give ourselves to Jesus.  Come to Jesus and ask for His help to save you.  Come to Jesus to be baptized.  Come to Jesus to begin to attend a Sunday School class.   Come to Jesus to begin to lead a ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ.  He is waiting to lift your life.

Will you be willing to break out with the Lord?  He is walking on the water and he invites us to step out of the boat of safety and go with Him.  Will we?
