February 13, 2005 am   Fellowship With The King   Genesis 2:8-25

By Ronald E. George Jr. at the Fayetteville Baptist Church

A little boy was sitting in a Sunday school class, listening to his teacher describe how in the beginning of creation, God made mankind from the dust of the earth and how after death our bodies will decompose, and we'll return to dust. The little boy turned to his friend, and he said, "You know, I think I got somebody under my bed at home. I'm not sure whether he's coming or going."  -- Jim Nicodem, "The Father Heart of God," Preaching Today, Tape No. 152.

My Sunday school class of kindergartners was studying the creation story. After several weeks, we were ready to review. "What did God make the first day?" I quizzed. "The second day?" They answered both questions correctly.

"And what happened on the third day?" I asked.

One little child, face shining with enthusiasm, exclaimed, "He rose from the dead!"

I was the new teacher for the toddler-age Sunday school class, which included my 14-month-old daughter. During a lesson on creation, I'd ask questions like, "Who made the trees?" or "Who made the sun?" and the children would respond, "God did." I was pleased the children learned quickly that God made everything.

Teaching lessons at home was more of a challenge. I had tried hard to teach my daughter to pick up her toys, and she wasn't learning very quickly. One day I walked into the living room to find toys scattered everywhere. In exasperation I asked, "Who made this mess?" My daughter looked at me with a proud smile and said, "God did!"

Scripture Text:  Gen. 2:8 (NIV) Now the LORD God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. 9 And the LORD God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground--trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 10 A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters. 11 The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold. 12 (The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin and onyx are also there.) 13 The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush. 14 The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Asshur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates. 15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die." 18 The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." 19 Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found. 21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. 23 The man said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called `woman, for she was taken out of man." 24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. 25 The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.

Created by the King and for the King.

“God has four ways of making a human body. He can create one without the agency of either man or woman as he did when he made Adam out of the dust of the ground. Then God can form a body through the agency of just a man as he did when he formed Eve from the rib taken from Adam's side. A third way is through the agency of both a man and a woman. This is the common way, the way we have received our bodies. But God can also form a body through the agency of just a woman, and that is the way Our Lord received his body-born of a virgin.”  --   R. I. Humbred

Get to know the King and Creator.  God had a want to.  He had a desire.  We are not the result of a cosmic accident.  We are the result of a divine plan.  We were created for Him.  How did He create us?  Hear the creation story of how God made us from the dirt He had already created.

Does this give Him the right to love us and desire to have fellowship?  Why does God want us to be friends with Him?  Does He need us?  How do you know that God loves us?  How do you know that God wants you?  We have the Bible, the Spirit, and God’s actions that show us that God loves us.  Jesus loves me this I know…

Created for Fellowship.

We were created to have fellowship with God. Since we were created in His image, we would desire as He did a friendship.  Friendship and fellowship with another would complete the greatest of God’s creation. Our lives are incomplete without the presence of the King.  The King gives our lives meaning and hope.  The King gives us fulfillment and peace.  The King gives our lives satisfaction a sense of being.

Adam was given a helper to assist him with the work and to give him companionship.  Friendship and fellowship would give Adam’s life a beauty that was missing.  The beauty’s name was Eve.

We were created In His image.  Created from red earth Adam was given the breath of God to make him complete.  The image of God set Adam up as the highest of God’s creation.  We were made like him.  We have an image like the Lord of all.  We have a soul that lives forever.  We have an ability to reason and think to decide what is right and what is wrong.  We have the power to choose God or reject God.  But, remember God chose us when He created us.

We were created so that we would want to get together with the Creator.  Adam and Eve are the result of God taking part of one and making two new creations. Without God our lives are empty.  Fill the void in your life with the Creator.  God gave us a free will to decide.  How have you decided?  Would you get together with the Lord?  He wants you.

Created for God’s pleasure.  Created for Worship.  Are we pleasing to God?  Fall in love with God this Valentine’s Day.  Rev. 3:20  He waits for your call.  Will you let Him in?  Let God, your Creator be your valentine.  He made a way by dying for you.  Will you give yourself to Him who gave Himself for you?
