April 3, 2005am   Seize the Daylight I Ephesians 5:8-17

By Ronald E. George Jr. at the Fayetteville Baptist Church

Seize the day - light.  Carpe diem.  Is it time to seize the daylight?

Now it is time to daylight savings time.  Did you change your clocks?  Did you wake up on time?  It is time to wake up and enjoy the snow and the extra hours of daylight.  Daylight savings time ought to be a way of life for the believers in Christ.

A new medical study has just discovered that Americans don’t get the required 8 hours of sleep that is necessary for the body to have good health.  I believe we need a new spiritual study to show how much of our spiritual health is effected by too much spiritual sleep in the darkness.  We need to wake up the spiritual light of God and get with it.

When Christ arose from the dead, He got up at first light.  Why?  First light of the third day meant that he had fulfilled His time in the darkness of death for you and me.  Those women of God who went to the tomb went at first light because the Sabbath of rest was over and now it was time to get up and go to work in the light.  The darkness had passed and now it was time to enjoy the light of God.

Will we seize the daylight and take advantage of the time that we have to be who God wants us to be?  Seize the day and take advantage of the time we have.  Why?  Because it won’t last forever.

Scripture Text:  Ephesians 5:8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light

9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth)

10 and find out what pleases the Lord.

11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.

12 For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret.

13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible,

14 for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said:

"Wake up, O sleeper,

rise from the dead,

and Christ will shine on you."

15 Be very careful, then, how you live--not as unwise but as wise,

16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.

17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is.

Nicodemus came in the dark.  Jesus seized the daylight.  Judas betrayed at night.  Peter denied the Lord by the light of the campfire.  John stood in the light at the foot of the cross.  Lazarus was called to come out of the dark of the tomb.  Have you seized the daylight?   You can come from Darkness to the Light of Christ.  It is a spiritual light.

1.  Once Darkness.  You are dark until...

Living in the dark.  Can’t see the light.  Don’t have a future, because you can’t see where you are going.  Don’t know which way to turn.  Have no hope.  We are living darkness without the Lord of light living in our hearts.  Don’t understand God’s will and don’t care.  You were unwise with no future, no hope, no help, no security, no peace, vulnerable.  Used to the dark because it is natural born in the dark.  Live in the dark.  No life. Fatalists.  Who say live now because we will die.  Buried alive in a tomb awaiting death.  Pretend it doesn’t matter.  Deceived into believing it doesn’t matter that you know you are going to die.  You are dark on the inside can only think about you.  Walking dead in sins.  Our lives were characterized by the fruitless deeds of darkness and shameful acts done in secret.  Foolish man built his house on the sand.  These are careless people living in a whatever attitude.  Living to please self only.

2.  Now light.

Someone has turned on the light in our lives.  Live as light in the Lord.  Live as children of light.  See the fruit of the light.  Goodness and righteousness, and truth.  Find out what pleases the Lord.  Avoid fruitless actions of dark.  But expose them.  Show them light.  Jesus is the light of the world Living carefully.  Make the most of every chance.  Wise man built his house on the Rock.  Heis light.  He is our example of light Living in dark .  He made a difference .  Do we bear fruit of light.?  Living to please God.

3.  What happened to make a change!  The light was turned on.

Someone woke up.  Jesus woke up.  Someone heard the alarm and got up.  They didn’t continue to lie there.

Wake up – O sleeper.  Get up before it is too late.  Rise from the dead.  Christ has shone on them .  Lazarus woke up.  Jonah got out.  Jesus is alive.  The disciples came out.  They decided to hear the alarm and get up.

Now they are the light.  No longer are they darkness.  They are making a difference in bearing the fruit of the light.  Will you wake up?  If you have then will you live as light in the world?

Seize the daylight and give yourself to the Lord before it is too late.  Now is the time.  Today is the day of salvation.  Will you take advantage of the time you have been given?
