April 3, 2005pm   Seize the Daylight II    Ephesians 5:8-21

By Ronald E. George Jr. at the Fayetteville Baptist Church

Carpe Diem:  Seize the Daylight.  It is time to wake up and make the most of the time we all have.  What have we done?  What will we do?

In a little bit of verse, Robert Richardson, a nineteenth century writer who paraphrased the Greek poet Horace, wrote that there are three things that will never return no matter how much we pray or weep. He said they were (1) the arrow shot from the bow, (2) the spoken word, and (3) the unimproved opportunity.    -- Robert C. Shannon, 1000 Windows, (Cincinnati, Ohio: Standard Publishing Company, 1997).

Ephesians 5:8 (NIV) For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light  9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10 and find out what pleases the Lord. 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, 14 for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: "Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you." 15 Be very careful, then, how you live--not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. 19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Living Light-  Live as children of the light.  Light must shine in the dark to be effective.  Light shows the way.  Leave the light on.  Light gives security and peace.  Light gives life.  Light gives hope.  Light exposes pitfalls and death traps.  Living light has been turned on and is making difference.  Wake up and Shine.

Make the most of every opportunity.  Why?  Because they know opportunities are limited.  Live carefully – wisely.

Don’t get drunk leads to sin (debauchery).  So be filled with the Spirit.  Yield to Him.  Sing and speak in Psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.  Sing and make music in your heart.  Give thanks to God for everything.

Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Someone has turned on the light in our lives.  Live as light in the Lord.  Live as children of light.

See the fruit of the light.  Goodness and righteousness, and truth.

Find out what pleases the Lord.  Avoid fruitless actions of dark.  But expose them.

Show them light.  Jesus is the light of the world Living carefully.
