May 22, 2005am   I’m Going On!   II Tim 3:14-17

By Ronald E. George Jr. at the Fayetteville Baptist Church

Flipping through our children's Bible, I pointed to a picture of Jesus surrounded by his disciples and asked my daughter to explain the story in her own words. Looking at it, she said, "Mommy, this is a story about Jesus. And here are all his disciples--Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts, and Romans!"

Today we will honor our Graduates and our baptism candidate with a Bible.  Why give them a Bible?  There are many gifts we could give, but this one is the only one that will lead you into life everlasting.  This is the only book that will have eternal value and eternal consequences in your life.  Remember what Paul told Timothy.  Why is it important to know what the Bible says?

2Tim 3:12 (NIV) In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, 13 while evil men and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15 and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

1.  Continue in what you have learned!!  Continue to live a godly life in Christ Jesus. Implies that some people won’t go on and some may have already quit.

Shows that problems will come, persecutions will happen, and temptations will lead you to quit.  But don’t give up trying to live in Christ.

Things will happen that will cause you to want to quit. I ain’t no quitter.

2.  Why should you continue?  Because you know from whom you learned it.  Timothy has learned it from his mother and grandmother.  Remember what you have learned from godly parents, godly teachers, and godly people. Remember those of sincere faith.  2Tim 1:5 (NIV) I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.

3.  If I am to continue and go on then how?

Remember what you have learned.  You know those who have taught you.

Remember the Word of God/Bible.  From infancy you have know the Holy Scriptures.  The Scriptures make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.  All Scripture is God breathed.

Remember to follow the Scriptures.  The Bible is your road map to succeed in life.  In it you will find salvation and wisdom.  The Scripture is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.  Through the Scripture you will have what you need to be equipped for every good work.  Will you continue on in the scriptures?
