January 8, 2006 am   The Rule of Engagement!     I Thessalonians 4

By Ronald E. George Jr. at the Fayetteville Baptist Church

Why?  Why should we serve the Lord?   Many folks have forgotten the why.  Without the why there is no reason for us to come together as a body of believers in the church.  We must remember the why.  This is why we receive the Lord’s supper each month.

What brings us together with the Lord?  What brings us to the church?  To sing in the choir?  To give our time, talent, and treasures to the Lord?  What causes us to pray, to worship, and to receive the Lord’s supper?

Jesus is the reason for the season of love, giving, and self-sacrifice.  We choose to strive to please God.  We want to do what God desires for our lives.  Paul says to do so more and more.

Scripture Text:  1The 4:1 (NIV) Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more. 2 For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus. 3 It is God's will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; 4 that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable, 5 not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God; 6 and that in this matter no one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him. The Lord will punish men for all such sins, as we have already told you and warned you. 7 For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. 8 Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit. 9 Now about brotherly love we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other. 10 And in fact, you do love all the brothers throughout Macedonia. Yet we urge you, brothers, to do so more and more. 11 Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you, 12 so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.

“Our business is people and

Our reason is Jesus Christ.

Our purpose is to personally live Jesus Christ.

Because of His love for us,

We can love Him and one another.

We believe in the absolute necessity of conversion to Jesus,

The absolute reality of eternal life now in Jesus,

And the absolute need of each other in the fellowship of believers.

Our desire is to present Jesus Christ In compassion and understanding

To every individual who does not know Him,

And to encourage and develop every individual who does know Him. “

Jesus is the rule of engagement.  He is our reason for being.  He is the reason we are here.  He is the purpose of our life.  He is our hope and our song.  He is our Lord and Savior.  He is the one who gave His life for me.

Why would you want to please God?  He is God, the creator, the Father, the One who gave His life for us.

1.      If you are.  Do this more and more.

2.      If you aren’t.  Hear the instructions by the authority of the Lord Jesus.  He is the Judge.

3.      It is God’s will.

4.      The Lord will punish and judge sin.  Jesus was punished for us.

5.      Don’t reject God.  It is the ultimate mistake.

6.      God teaches us to love one another.

7.      Do so more and more.

8.      Remember that Jesus is our reason.  He is our reason for living.

Take this communion in remembrance of Him.

1Cor 11:23 (NIV) For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread,

24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me."

25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me."

26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.
