April 1, 2007am   The Coming of the Covenant King  Isaiah 42:1-9

Palm Sunday

By Ronald E. George Jr. at the Fayetteville Baptist Church

Who is this one who is coming down the street?  He is the covenant King.  He is the one who was promised from old.  He is the Lord our Savior.

Scripture Text:  Isaiah 42      “Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him and he will bring justice to the nations. 2 He will not shout or cry out, or raise his voice in the streets. 3 A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out. In faithfulness he will bring forth justice; 4 he will not falter or be discouraged till he establishes justice on earth. In his law the islands will put their hope.” 5 This is what God the Lord says— he who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and all that comes out of it, who gives breath to its people, and life to those who walk on it: 6 “I, the Lord , have called you in righteousness; I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles, 7 to open eyes that are blind, to free captives from prison and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness. 8 “I am the Lord ; that is my name! I will not give my glory to another or my praise to idols. 9 See, the former things have taken place, and new things I declare; before they spring into being I announce them to you.” [1]

1.      He is chosen.  God has chosen him.  Have you?

2.      He brings justice.  He will make the crooked straight.

3.      He has the Spirit. He is led by the Spirit of the one who created the heavens.

4.      He gives mercy.  He gives mercy to the people.

5.      He is called by God.  He is called by the giver of life.

6.      He is the covenant.  He is the fulfillment of the covenant that was given to the children.  Since fulfilling the old covenant he offers a new covenant.

7.      He is the light for the Gentiles.  For those who live in darkness he is the light.

8.      He is the healer.  For those who are blind he will open their eyes.

9.      He is the deliverer.  For those who are captive he is their freedom.

10. He is the redeemer.  He paid the price of freedom for the captives.

11. He is the Hope of the world.   What hope do we have without Him?

12. He is the giver of the new hope.  He gives a new hope never before seen.  Have you seen him and received his hope?

He gives these things to us today.   Have you received Him?
