May 6, 2007am    Foul Play   John 13:31-38

By Ronald E. George Jr. at the Fayetteville Baptist Church

God is high and lifted up.  He will be glorified.  Judas had just left to betray the Lord.  Then the Lord said now is the Son of Man glorified and God is glorified in him.

Scripture Text:  John 13:31 When he was gone, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once. 33 “My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come. 34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” 36 Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.” 37 Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” 38 Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? I tell you the truth, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times! [1]

1.      God will be Glorified:  What is glorified? God was made to appear superior.

Why, because He is God.  He is superior.  He is the way, the truth, and the life. He is salvation and the way that we can live and have the abundant life eternally.

2.      God was glorified through the Son. God was glorified in Jesus’ commitment to follow the Father’s will.  Would we? Jesus was glorified in the fact that He followed even to death.  How far will you go?

3.      God was glorified through the betrayal of Judas.  Judas fulfilled the prophecy.  God will use even those who are working evil to bring the glory.

4.      God was glorified through the disciples and the love they have for one another.  They would love as Jesus had loved them.  God is glorified when we love one another as the Lord has loved us.

5.      God was glorified through the Rooster.  The rooster fulfilled the Word of the Lord.  He reminded Peter of what he had said.  He reminded Peter of what the Lord had said.  God will be glorified through his creation.

6.      God was glorified through Peter.  God is glorified when we admit our failures and sins.  Such as when Peter denied the Lord but he came back to God.  God is glorified when we follow Jesus.  Even to the death.

7.      God will be glorified when we follow the Lord.  He will be glorified when we obey his will for our lives.  He will be glorified when we take communion.  He will be glorified when we are baptized.  He will be glorified when love one another.
