Rainelle Christian Academy
Athletic Department
As a member of the WVCEA, RCA has produced State Champion teams in each sport that the Eagles participate in. Starting this year with four previous championships backing them up, the varsity volleyball team is looking forward to another successful season. Led by seniors Penny-Jo Thornton, Jessica Bennett, and Melissa Tuck, the nine-player team has a chance to put a fifth banner up in the gymnasium.
Quality soccer teams have been a characteristic of Rainelle Christian for well over a decade. Recently, a third state championship banner was put up on the walls of the RCA gym after the soccer team of last year won the State Championship game 6-0. They have started this season with a bigger roster than the previous years in hopes of yet another blue banner. The school has never won the State Tournament two years in a row back-to-back. The team is led by senior John Smith and juniors Kip Howard, Ryan Grimmett, and Joshua Tuck. Although this year's team has a few players who have played together even since the third grade, the team also consists of slightly inexperienced players who are quickly building up their talents.
Head Coach Dr. Tim Workman has been volunteering his time for years training young men not only to succeed in the game of basketball itself, but yet training them in team work, to be dedicated, loyal, and to do one's absolute best in whatever opportunity that has been placed before him. With two state championship banners hanging up in the Eagles' gym, the school is looking forward to producing yet another very successful team in the upcoming basketball season.
RCA also participates in varsity girls' basketball. The Lady Eagles of 2001-2002 finished the season with a good overall record and also placed second in the state. The Varsity Girls plan to excel to even a greater extent this year in hopes of hanging up the school's first varsity girls' basketball state championship banner.
Rainelle Christian not only competes on the varsity level, but in elementary and junior high as well. RCA Athletic Director Alan Schoolcraft-Williams works diligently in not just scheduling games for every team in every sport for the school, but also coaches the elementary soccer teams as well. All children ranging from preschool age up to sixth grade are eligible to play under the Christian leadership of Mr. Schoolcraft-Williams.
RCA prides itself in producing high quality athletes through the years who not only love their favorite sports, but also are taught to give God the glory and use the talents and gifts that He has given them to the farthest extent possible.
